La Saccisica, land of origin

La Saccisica is a low-lying plain, almost at sea level, located between the city of Padua and the Venetian Lagoon. It includes the municipalities of Piove di Sacco, Arzergrande, Bovolenta, Brugine, Codevigo, Correzzola, Legnaro, Polverara, Pontelongo, and Sant’Angelo di Piove di Sacco.

A land rich in history

Once part of the rural district of Padua, this area was also the beloved hinterland of Venetian nobles — home to their country residences and an inexhaustible source of grain.

The origins

The name “Saccisica” comes from its main town, Piove di Sacco, which was an important outpost of the Carraresi family during their conflicts with the Republic of Venice for control over the territory between Padua and Venice. Much of the Saccisica area falls within the Corti Benedettine Padovana DOC.

In the early 1400s, the area between the Brenta and Adige rivers had few permanent human settlements, due to two main factors: the severe damage caused by the prolonged and repeated clashes between the Carraresi of Padua and the Republic of Venice, and the presence of an extremely marshy landscape. Both the landowners from Padua and the wealthy Venetian nobles showed little interest in addressing the issue, as they did not consider it worthwhile to invest their capital in land improvements with uncertain returns.

The rise of the wine economy

In this context, a major land reclamation project was initiated in Correzzola by the Benedictine monks residing in the local court, which proved to be fundamental and a driving force for the entire economy of the Padua area.

The Benedictines skillfully enhanced the value of the Bacchiglione River, which flowed through their land, by taking advantage of its navigability and hydraulic power for energy purposes. They did so by building advanced hydraulic machines for their time. In this way, the Benedictine monks succeeded in creating and organizing a large agricultural enterprise that transformed the Saccisica region.

The area offers red wines (Merlot, Cabernet, Raboso, Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, Rosato, Raboso Passito) and white wines (Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Pinot Bianco, Moscato, and Passito).
